EEE PC

The EEE PC is a small giant.
With an external key board, mouse and monitor attached, the EEE PC is a fine desktop.

External Monitor

It a small giant, but does a great job!

Increase resolution

  1. Set maximum screen resolution for an EEE PC.
  2. CTRL + ALT + T to get a terminal
  3. xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024 --refresh 60- --output LVDS --off
Xandros allows a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768.
The small giant can handle a much larger resolution, much much larger.
This requires a bit of hacking configuration files. But it does the job.
And you can two screens too!
Fun: Turn your screen to portrait.

As desktop with the lid closed

The EEE PC is able to work with the lid closed.
That seemed a good idea, saving space.

Put the monitor on top of the PC.

But, the PC does get hot with the lid closed.
And, while traveling, you loose the standby on closing the lid.
And for switching the PC on, the lid does have to be open.
So, close, but no cigar. The PC is back to standby upon lid closure.

Applications

Software Installation

  1. CTRL + ALT + T for terminal
  2. sudo synaptic
Unfortunately Asus is not very up to date with Linux software.

A different Linux OS

Flash 10 is not working under Xandros.
That is a bummer. Google street view does not work.
An easypeasy demo looks very good.
But installing a new operating system is a job that I would happily outsource.
So who knows, a new year, a new operating system?

Till next nut,
